An advance of wages to miners, retrospective since September 17, has had the effect of increasing coal by 2s 6d per ton and the Dundee householders who buy coal in small quantities had yesterday to pay an advance of 2¼d per mett, which is equivalent to a hundredweight and a half. Official intimation of the increase in price was received in Dundee from the Controller of Coal Mines, in which it was stated that the advance was in order to meet the war wages increase granted to coal miners.

A congregation of more than 500, including students in their gowns, gathered at Dundee (St Mary’s) Parish Church for the enrolment service of Dundee College of Education. The Rev Edwin S. Towill, principal lecturer in religious education at the college, took the service. The congregation listened to the Rev John M. Graham preach the sermon. He asked young teachers to serve not the doubtful values of society, but to question them and serve the highest good they could discover.

On their first day together on patrol, two Kinross police officers were confronted by a shotgunwielding robber. Twice they tried to wrestle the gun away from the man, who then sped off in their patrol car before later being arrested by a number of their colleagues. Yesterday Constables Douglas Pover and Jacqueline Fraser of Western Division (Perth and Kinross) were presented with certificates of commendation by Chief Constable Jack Bowman at divisional headquarters in Perth.

Plans for an eco-church in Monifieth have received strong local support. Correspondence backing the proposals has been received by Angus Council during the consultation process. Monifieth Parish Church wants to knock down the overspill building on High Street and replace it with a 21st Century facility. The site is currently home to a dilapidated church hall that belonged to South Church. Monifieth supported three kirks until the congregations voted in favour of a union in 2007.
