Midfielder extends stay at Pittodrie

-

Aberdeen midfielder Scott Wright has signed a contract extension to keep him at Pittodrie until the summer of 2021, and more of his teammates are poised to follow suit.

The 20-year-old, who signed a two-year deal in January, has extended his commitment for a further two years.

The Dons are close to agreeing contract extensions with Kenny McLean, Anthony O’Connor and Scott McKenna, who are all in the final year of their deals.

Scotland U21 international Wright, a product of the club’s youth system, said: “The manager spoke to me a couple of weeks ago and things moved pretty quickly.

“I’m delighted to be staying, and such a lot has happened since I signed earlier in the year. I’ve had a run in the team and I’ve managed to score some goals.

“There’s a lot of competition in my position, which is healthy and just encourages everyone to try that bit harder.”

Manager Derek McInnes is especially keen to hang on to McLean, who was a summer transfer target for Pedro Caixinha’s Rangers.

The Dons rejected a £300,000 bid from the Ibrox club for the former St Mirren player in June, with the figure well below Aberdeen’s valuation of the Scotland international.

McKenna, 20, has been a standout for the Dons alongside Kari Arnason in the centre of the defence, helping the club record three clean sheets on the spin.

O’Connor also impressed after being pushed forward into a defensive midfield role, and produced another solid performance during Saturday’s 1-0 victory against Hibernian.
