Drink-driving camper pulled from car at holiday park

-

A drink-driver was hauled from his car by tourists after he got behind the wheel at a Perthshire holiday park.

Allan Henderson spent hours drinking with fellow guests at the Newmill Farm Campsite near Stanley. However, the evening descended into chaos after he informed them he wanted to go for a drive.

Perth Sheriff Court heard most of the holidaymakers had gone to bed, only to be woken by the sound of his engine.

One witness found Henderson behind the wheel of his car, attempting to start a reverse manoeuvre.

They hauled open the driver’s door and dragged him from his seat before grabbing his keys.

A struggle followed as Henderson attacked the witness and shouted and swore at him.

The 39-year-old, of Dundas Street, Lochgelly, later claimed he had simply jumped into his car to have a cigarette and had started the engine so he could listen to the radio.

When challenged by police officers he admitted moving the car but said it was only because he was blocking another vehicle.

Henderson said he had no recollection of saying to go for a drive, despite numerous witnesses reporting he had done so “repeatedly”.

He was breath-tested by officers following the incident, which happened at around 2am on July 1 this year, and gave a reading nearly four times the legal limit.

Henderson admitted struggling with a man who was trying to stop him from driving while he was under the influence of alcohol.

He also admitted driving with excess alcohol – 85 mics when the legal limit is just 22.

Henderson was fined £525 and disqualified for three years.
