The Scottish Wildcat 8/10

- Review by Rachel Jackson.

Christopher Clegg, Merlin Unwin Books, £20. The Scottish Wildcat by biological research scientist Christopher Clegg is an insightful book which approaches all the aspects imaginable for any reader who wants to learn about this endangered animal.

Dr Clegg, through examples of his own first rare sightings in the 90s, supported by examples of stories in newsletters, newspapers, scientific research and historical facts, accounts for the slow extinction of this British mammal – once prominent in the whole country but now only found in five regions of Scotland.

One interesting theme of this book is that it challenges the assumption that cats are cute and cuddly.

This particular species – the Scottish wildcat – is dangerous, preying on small animals and mauling humans who come too close and frighten them, hence their nickname the British Tiger.

The book also stresses the importance of saving the Scottish wildcat on account of its important historical associations.

Some Scottish clans, for example, used the skin, name and image of the cat as symbols of protection and there are ongoing associations with surnames today.

These cats also have unusual swimming abilities as documented by several surprising sightings; and with eyesight seven times better than a human’s, they hunt for up to nine hours a day.

A fascinating read for wildlife enthusiasts and anyone who wants to find out more about this elusive iconic creature.
