Hundreds more homes in Fife benefit from fibre broadband

-

More homes across Fife are now enjoying the benefits of fibre broadband as part of a £428 million Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband roll-out.

Communities including Annsmuir, Arncroach, Colinsburgh, Dysart and Kennoway have been given access to the new high-speed network for the first time.

It has also been extended to more homes and businesses in several other areas of Fife, including Auchterderran in Cardenden, Crail, Kincardine, Kinghorn, Kirkcaldy, Peat Inn and St Andrews.

More than 800,000 premises across Scotland should now be receiving fibre broadband as the programme, one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe, reaches more remote and rural areas.

The tally passed another 34,000 households and businesses in the last six months and across the country around 4,100 new fibre street cabinets are now live and more than 8,700km of cable has been laid by engineers from Openreach, Scotland’s digital network business.

Altany Craik, convener of Fife’s economy, tourism, strategic planning and transportation committee, said: “Digital connectivity for all is important for an inclusive society.

“Fast internet access is essential for Fife–based firms and residents to increase connectivity, boost business growth and drive competitiveness.

“That’s why Fife Council has invested £2.8m in supporting this new infrastructure that will further transform the ability of Fife to attract investment, create jobs and help make Fife the best place to do business.”
