Tributes to wellbeing volunteer
Tributes have been paid to a volunteer who battled back from ill health to help others take part in physical activities.
John Russell from Burntisland, who has died at the age of 65, was one of the first participants in Fife Sports and Leisure Trust’s volunteer scheme where he helped people referred to the health programme.
He began volunteering more than four years ago after taking part in the trust’s cardiac rehabilitation programme, following his own cardiac incident some years previously.
His experience of being referred to a specially-designed physical activity class and the health and wellbeing benefits he gained from the sessions prompted him to help others.
John volunteered at classes each week, offering reassurance and motivation to participants.
Anita Jefferies, Move More Fife development officer for the trust, said: “John was a much appreciated member of the volunteer team and he will be sadly missed.
“He provided great support and commitment to others, giving advice and confidence to those who may have never experienced a physical activity class or used a gym before.”
She added: “John volunteered four times a week, supporting classes at Beacon Leisure Centre and Templehall Community Centre. He also trained as a walk leader.”
Anita described John as a quiet, caring man and said: “He had a great way with people.”
