Quality stifled by lack of confidence

-

Saints boss Tommy Wright is refusing to push the panic button just yet after Saturday’s defeat at Firhill made it four defeats in their last five games.

“We’ve had these runs year in, year out,” he said. “It happens in this league.

“It was different on Saturday as they played really well and got themselves into good positions.

“We controlled the game and let ourselves down by a soft goal – good play by Storey, but soft by our point of view.

“Our approach play was good, but we just didn’t have that final ball.

“We didn’t create enough chances out of the possession we had and that let us down most.

“It’s hard to believe we are still sixth and that shows you what this league’s like.

“The quality is there, but the quality is not being allowed to come through because of a lack of confidence.”

Meanwhile, Jags boss Alan Archibald praised his side’s performance as they moved above Dundee and Kilmarnock and off the foot of the table.

However, he erred on the side of caution with trips to Ibrox and Murrayfield to face Rangers and Hearts coming up next month.

He said: “It gives us a chance to breathe as it gets us off the bottom and gets the confidence up as well with two clean sheets.

“We were a bit disappointed we didn’t get three points the other night but it’s been a good week.

“We’re not out of the woods yet, we’ve got two tough games in November.”

On Storey’s winning effort, he said: “Miles showed his pace. He showed a great bit of composure to finish it off and I’m delighted for him.”
