Second best is not an option for our V&A

-

It seems like barely a week goes by without some new report trumpeting the delights of Dundee – and crediting the under-construction V&A museum for the sense of optimism currently circling the city.

No less a publication than the Wall Street Journal was singing the praises of “Scotland’s coolest city” last week and highlighting Japanese architect Kengo Kuma’s stunning new museum of design as a major attraction.

So there may be surprise in some quarters at the revelation that bosses of the £80 million landmark have gone back to the drawing board in their quest to fill one of its plum jobs.

The search for a chief operating officer commenced in September when the role was put on offer with an annual salary of £55,000-£60,000. It has now been reposted – this time with a higher salary – in the hope of attracting a higher calibre of candidate.

The successful applicant will play a central position in the museum’s development – overseeing the opening next year and establishing the venue’s place on the cultural map – so it is essential that the right person is appointed to the job.

The eyes of the world are on Dundee and nothing but the best will do if the city is to prove it can live up to the hype. The team already in place at the V&A are working hard to make that happen and they are to be saluted for their determination to get it done right, rather than getting it done quickly.
