Showing that we care

-

The charity Blythswood work tirelessly throughout the year providing food, schooling, training and support in various forms to many hundreds of needy people in Eastern Europe. They are in the front line of poverty such as we can barely imagine.

The first Shoe Box Appeal was in 1993, resulting in 300 boxes being delivered to Romania and Albania. Last year Blythswood despatched 121,474 boxes to nine countries. The two-millionth box was delivered last year.

Practical gifts such as warm hats, scarves, gloves, new socks, shampoo and a bar of soap bring comfort and dignity to people in need. The only stipulations are that no food is allowed, apart from small packets of sweets. Toiletries cannot be more than 300ml or they have to be removed (Customs are strict).

Items can include a small toy, string, notepads, pencils, pens, rubbers, sharpeners – the list is endless and can be luxuries for man, woman or child. Put in a box wrapped in Christmas paper, your gifts bring the joy of experiencing a simple act of human kindness.

The collection this year will be in St James’ Church, Fort Street, Broughty Ferry and volunteers will be on hand from 9 am to 5 pm from Monday, November 6 to Friday, November 10. Two extra slots have been added – Tuesday, November 7 and Thursday, November 9 from 7-9pm.

For more information on the boxes, please contact Louise Scott on 01382 775671.
