100 years ago

Regulation­s for the re-examining of men who are dissatisfi­ed with their grading by the National Service Medical Boards have been issued. Any man who is dissatisfi­ed with his grading may apply to his Appeal Tribunal for leave to be re-examined. The tribunal will grant leave if they consider that a reasonable case for re-examinatio­n has been made out. The assessors will be men of high standing and will be appointed by the Scottish Office. The grading of men by the medical assessors will be final.

Green’s Playhouse, Nethergate, Dundee, is to be turned into an entertainm­ents centre. Mecca, Ltd, took over the 4,100-seat cinema recently. They intend to start developing the premises in February. Proposed extensive alteration­s in the tearoom section has led to the cancellati­on of all coffee mornings bookings from the New Year. Mr M. McGinley, the manager, said: “There are 12 small organisati­ons affected, but when the bookings were made they were warned that this might happen.”

The Princess of Wales took the remarkable step of publicly condemning “untrue and hurtful” newspaper allegation­s of friction between her and the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh last night. Buckingham Palace issued the statement on her behalf, criticisin­g the “recent wave of misleading reports.” Some papers responded by saying they had nothing to apologise for and describing the statement as “astonishin­g”. There was no direct reference to her marriage in the statement.

Andy Murray capped the best season of his tennis career by overtaking Novak Djokovic to be crowned world No 1 for the first time. The Scot celebrated his rise to the top of the world rankings by beating John Isner 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 in a hard-fought BNP Paribas Masters final in Paris. Murray, 29, already assured of the No 1 spot after Milos Raonic’s withdrawal from their semi-final, sealed his eighth ATP Tour title of the season with victory over his big-serving 6ft 10in American opponent.
