People shape our country

-

Sir, - After reading about yet another MP exposed for inappropriate behaviour I got myself ready to meet my daughter to attend the festival of remembrance at the Caird Hall, Dundee, on Saturday night.

Feeling rather heavy hearted about the state of our country we headed for the concert where we rubbed shoulders with veterans and serving soldiers, and cadets selling poppies and programmes. We began to smile.

I sat and watched the parade of standards and the muster and then stood to sing the national anthem to the wonderful music of the Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

What began to distract me in a good way me was the effects of the dimmed lights of the hall which, every so often, caused a flash on a polished trombone or an officer’s button.

The lights continued to make our guardians sparkle from time to time, whether it was a button, a medal or a polished belt.

I began to feel a great sense of pride in our country, but especially of those men and women, girls and boys, sitting on the stage who are prepared to protect us if need be.

After the amazing Parcel O’ Rogues lifted the roof with their wonderful performance, I thought all was all right with our land.

I briefly thought of our rather vulnerable politicians, and ended singing God Save Our Queen with even more gusto. This is our land. We are its backbone. Barbara Sturrock. 12 Invergowrie Drive, Dundee.
