End of an era for Fife nightclub after four decades of music

- Cheryl peebles

A Dunfermline venue has called time after four decades as a leading light in the town’s nightlife.

Johnson’s Nightclub began life as a magnet for revellers at the start of the 1980s and the beat went on right through to the 21st Century.

However, the team behind the Pilmuir Street venue, nicknamed Jiggies, have decided to call it a day to follow other pursuits.

A message posted on Facebook read: “Well everyone, after 37 wonderful years, time has been called.

“No one can go on forever and Alfred and his family have decided that there is a whole world out there that they want to carry on exploring.

“There are so many great memories and many amazing people to thank for all the gifts they have given us.

“We’ve had a blast and now we just feel really grateful that we lived through it with all of you who have worked here with dedication, the musicians who have given us so many wonderful memories and especially you, our beautiful customers who, over a few generations danced, loved and supported each other and us too.”

Hundreds of customers who hit the dancefloor and propped up the bar over the years shared fond memories of the nightspot, which one claimed to be Dunfermline’s answer to the Hacienda.

Among those who posted warm memories on social media was a former customer who popped the question in the venue.

Kenny Brogan wrote: “End of an era. Great nights in the 80s watching Devine and King plus every weekend starting in the main bar then lounge then nightclub.

“And let’s not forget my wedding proposal on Valentine’s Day 27 years ago.”
