The prospects for the milk industry will be debated at AgriScot by dairy sector analyst Chris Walkland.

He has promised to give pointers on how the milk price might settle out over the next six months at one of the event’s seminars.

“The dairy sector has had a tumultuous few years and whilst markets have been and are a lot more positive, it is fair to say that there’s some turbulence ahead,” he said.

“The market has turned now and farmers need to be aware of the rapidly changing dynamics and prospects.

“How is Brexit likely to affect the sector? What are the potential implications of trade deals with non-EU countries? How will our trading relationship with the Republic of Ireland, traditionally a big exporter of dairy produce to the UK, be affected?

He will team up with Kite Consulting’s Scotland-based consultant, David Keiley, who has experience in providing technical and business consultancy to dairy businesses.

He will look at look at some of the technical and practical issues being seen on farms.

The seminar will then focus on what farmers might do to maximise opportunities and mitigate challenges.

Also on the programme at AgriScot is a Question Time event for dairy farmers featuring some of the biggest names in the dairy sector.

Speakers include First Milk CEO Shelagh Hancock, NFUS vice-president Gary Mitchell, AHDB Dairy chairman Gwyn Jones and Mr Walkland.

Dairying will also be the focus of attention in the ring when an increased entry of some of the best cattle from throughout the British Isles will be judged by Peter Prior.
