Capital countdown
“The weekend quiz question relating to Dundee United’s ‘capital countdown’ prompted requests from fans of rival Courier Country clubs to match up their own European top city visits,” writes Fraser Elder.
“United were leaders with 10 capitals plus a friendly visit to Berlin (2013). Next up are Dunfermline Athletic posting six – Dublin (1961), Copenhagen (1965), Oslo (1966), Zagreb (1966), Bratislava (1969) and Warsaw (1969).
“Tayside neighbours Dundee visited three capitals with the Dens men lining up in Lisbon (1962), Amsterdam (1967) and Copenhagen (1971), while St Johnstone are the only club in the area to have visited the capitals Budapest (1971) and Minsk (2013).
“Falkirk and Raith Rovers deserve a mention with the Bairns visiting Vaduz, capital of Liechtenstein in 2009. Rovers’ most famous port of call was Munich, the capital of Bavaria, in 1995 where they lined up against Bayern.”
