A man has been detained after police “swarmed” on a Dundee street.

The incident happened at around 1.30pm yesterday in Yarrow Terrace and led to squads of police blocking a large section of the area’s main road.

Officers could be seen preventing drivers and pedestrians from gaining access to several side streets.

Eyewitnesses described seeing officers carrying firearms, while others carried equipment to knock down doors.

Police had said they were responding to reports of “concerns for a man”.

Much of the Menzieshill street was closed while the incident continued. An eyewitness described the scene as “swarming” with police.

Bemused members of the public took to the streets to try and establish what was going on outside their homes.

Most described frustration and bewilderment, but some older residents expressed concern at the dramatic scenes.

As officers carried out their inquiries, multiple drivers had to perform threepoint turns after discovering their street had been closed.

One man who had just returned home for the day reported seeing an officer “running round the corner with a gun over his shoulder”.

The man, who didn’t want to be named said: “I saw a police officer run round the corner with body armour on.

“I finished early for the day. I didn’t expect all of this.”

Another female resident who was close to the property at the focus of officers’ inquiries, said: “The same thing happened a couple of weeks ago as well.

“This is a lot worse than last time, though. “The road wasn’t all shut off last time.” After more than two hours of a tense stand-off, police confirmed the man in question had been detained by officers.

Shortly before 4pm, a Police Scotland spokesman confirmed: “A man has been detained in connection with an incident at Yarrow Terrace, Dundee.

“This was an isolated incident and there was no threat to the wider community.

“Members of the public are thanked for their patience during the incident and the road is now reopened.”
