A jersey worn by Arbroath-born former Scotland and Dundee goalkeeper Bill Brown in an FA Cup final has sold for £12,000 at auction.

It had been expected to fetch £3,000 to £5,000.

The green jersey was worn when he played for Spurs against Burnley in front of the Queen and a 100,000 crowd in the FA Cup final at Wembley on May 5 1962. Spurs won the cup for the second year running by beating Burnley 3-1.

The continued interest in the match was proved at Graham Budd Auctions in London.

The jersey was previously sold at Sotheby’s in London on September 11 2003 for £2,160.

William Dallas Fyfe Brown, known as Bill, played for Arbroath Cliffburn and Carnoustie Panmure before joining Dundee in September 1949 at the age of 17.

He played for Dundee in their 3-2 win against Rangers in front of 92,325 people in the Scottish League Cup final at Hampden Park on October 27 1951.

In June 1959 Dundee sold Brown to Spurs for £16,500. He went on to star for the Spurs teams which won the Football League and FA Cup double of 1960-1961, the FA Cup in 1961-1962, and European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1962-1963. He played for Scotland 28 times. When his English football career ended he joined Canadian club Toronto Falcons, in April 1967 and later worked in real estate in Canada, where he died, aged 73, on November 30 2004.
