Student named Beacon of Hope
A St Andrews University student who has dedicated herself to helping young people with cancer has been recognised as a Beacon of Hope by the Lymphoma Association.
Natalia Bartolome, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in 2015, received the award from the national cancer charity at a ceremony in Birmingham.
Now in remission, Natalia has written about her experiences in a blog entitled ‘Hodgkin’s lymphoma, my story’ and has contributed to resources aimed at teenagers and young adults with lymphoma, including the Lymphoma Association’s young person’s guide to lymphoma.
BBC Radio 4 presenter Susan Rae hosted the awards ceremony and read out an excerpt of Natalia’s nomination, which read: “I believe Natalia should receive this award because since her own diagnosis, her priority has been to help others with the disease and raise awareness.
“Additionally, Natalia aims to raise awareness of lymphoma in people her age through other charities… writing articles about the truth behind Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
“Natalia’s attendance at cancer conferences and personal blog has also helped many people and I credit her for all her work.”
Jonathan Pearce, chief executive of the Lymphoma Association, said: “We provide specialist medical information and support to anyone affected by lymphoma and the Beacons of Hope Awards are a chance for us to say thank you and to celebrate the achievements of people like Natalia who are making a real difference to people living with a cancer diagnosis.”
