Man charged over alleged sex attack
A man is expected to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court tomorrow in connection with an alleged rape in the city.
Police announced yesterday afternoon they had charged a 36-year-old man as part of a major investigation mounted in the area of the city just off Hawkhill last week.
After receiving a report of a serious sexual assault, officers descended on the West Henderson’s Wynd area, sealing off streets and warning residents to stay within their homes.
Their probe centred on an 18-year-old student’s claims she had been attacked.
They were also investigating whether a man tried to force his way into another woman’s home in Polepark Road around 20 minutes before.
It has not yet been confirmed if the incidents were linked, but police said they were investigating the attempted break-in as part of their inquiries.
After issuing witness appeals in the wake of the incident, Detective Chief Inspector Graham Binnie, who led the inquiry, praised the public for their help.
He said: “I would like to thank the members of the public for their response to the appeal, this generated a number of positive lines of inquiry.”
Police maintained their presence around the area where the incident is said to have happened, over the weekend.
West End councillor Fraser Macpherson urged residents to remain calm and to report any relevant information to the police.
He said: “I’m aware that there has been a significant police operation and that the police presence is very much in the area.
“People are understandably shocked and very concerned for the young lady involved.
“It is important to remember that this sort of terrible thing is highly unusual – but nonetheless, people should contact police with any concerns and any information they may have.”
The victim is being supported by family and specialist officers.
