Swifts progress but no joy for Coupar Angus

Freezing weather takes toll

- PeTer rundo

The weather played havoc with the Junior football card as only two Courier Country clubs saw action.

Jeanfield Swifts progressed to the Scottish Cup fourth round but Coupar Angus’ interest was ended.

Swifts eased to a 3-0 win away to Premier Division Tranent.

They took the lead after 10 minutes when a Gary Fergus free-kick was headed home by Chris Anton.

Ross Gunnion’s side doubled their lead on 28 minutes when Fergus was brought down in the box and Rhys Davies hammered home the spot-kick.

A Fraser Mills counter with quarter of an hour left capped a thoroughly professional performance.

Although Coupar Angus are muchimproved, it was always going to be a big ask for Logan McConnachie’s men at two-times winners Arthurlie – and so it proved to be as they lost out 3-1.

The Barrhead side went three up through Jordan Craig, Jordan Chisholm and Michael Daly before Aaron Fraser pulled one back for the visitors.

Elsewhere it was a good afternoon for East Region clubs, none of whom lost.

Haddington, Bonnyrigg Rose, Bo’ness and Blackburn United all won, while Dunbar held Hermes to a draw.

Of the 32 scheduled ties only 10 beat the weather and only one East Region League game survived.

Meanwhile, Kelty Hearts’ hard work to get New Central Park playable paid off with a 4-0 win over Preston Athletic in the East of Scotland League.

Scott Dalziel broke the deadlock five minutes from the break.

Stuart Cargill added a second just before half-time.

Ross Philp added the third five minutes after the restart, with Cargill’s second coming two minutes later to replicate the score in Preston’s previous visit in the League Cup in September.
