Cupar first aider crowned Young Volunteer of the Year at awards
A Cupar man has been honoured at an awards ceremony for his continued contribution and dedication to volunteering and for helping to save lives through first aid.
Ross Stockton, 21, won the Young Volunteer of the Year title at the sixth annual St Andrew’s First Aid Scottish First Aid Awards, which were presented at a ceremony held in Glasgow.
The award is given in recognition of the efforts of someone under the age of 25 who has excelled at learning, teaching, practising or supporting first aid at an exemplary level – and has gone the extra mile to ensure more people can acquire the skills to become the difference between life and death.
Ross, who has volunteered for St Andrew’s First Aid for five years, was hailed as a role model to his peers and an example of what can be achieved with hard work and commitment.
He gives up more than 250 hours of his time every year to commit to volunteering duties and is the youngest member ever to complete the leadership course in the organisation’s 135-year history. He has already assumed a number of leadership roles at major events, managing large teams of volunteers, many of whom have several years more experience.
Commandant Louise Barr said: “He is an inspiration to us all and we are confident that he will continue to grow, develop and provide a positive contribution to the future of St Andrew’s First Aid.”
Stuart Callison, chief executive of St Andrew’s First Aid, added: “Ross’ attitude, approach and commitment are just the type of attributes we look for in our volunteers and as a result, he has made significant strides in just a few short years.
“He is seen as a great ambassador for youth and I am delighted he has won.”
