Who’s Who: Local names grace reference book highlighting the world’s most influential people

- Dick barTon

Seven people from Courier Country are among the 750 worldwide new entries in the 2018 edition of Who’s Who, which is published today.

Inclusion in Who’s Who, a reference book which contains more than 33,000 autobiographical entries of some of the most powerful, influential and talented people in the world, is by invitation only.

Local names making the famous guide for the first time are:

Professor Sally Mapstone: Principal and vice-chancellor of St Andrews University;

Elaine Logan: Perth-born warden of Glenalmond College;

John Clark: Chairman of Cupar-based John Clark Motor Group;

Lord Reith: Grandson of the first Lord Reith, who was director-general of the BBC. Perth-born Lord Reith lives at Methven;

Stephen Kerr: Dundee-born Conservative MP for Stirling and a product of Forfar Academy;

Andrew Bowie: Arbroath-born Conservative MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine;

Kirstene Hair: Brechin-born Conservative MP for Angus, who overturned a large majority to unseat the SNP’s Mike Weir in this year’s general election.

In the 2018 edition of Who’s Who the seven locals are joined by, among others, French President Emmanuel Macron, police chief Cressida Dick and awardwinning wine writer and television personality Oz Clarke.

Everyone in Who’s Who is invited to compile his or her own entry, so entries can be as long or as short as personalities wish.

British wine writer Clarke needed 41 lines to list his achievements and awards.

The entries of the seven people from this area are comparatively brief and modest.

Professor Mapstone explains her life and work in just 19 lines, three lines more than the 16-line entry of Pope Francis, one line less than the 20-line entry of the Dalai Lama and three lines fewer than the 22-line entry of US President Donald Trump.

Professor Mapstone, President Macron and all the others will now remain in Who’s Who until they die, when they will be automatically transferred to Who’s Who’s sister publication Who Was Who.

The 2018 edition of Who’s Who is published today by A & C Black at £310.
