Alert following fake note scam

-

Businesses and charities in St Andrews are being warned about a fake note scam.

Police have urged retailers to be on the lookout after a young man tried to pass off a fake Bank of Ireland £20 note in two shops in the town on Monday.

The first incident happened at 1.30pm at the Salvation Army shop in Church Street when the teenager, believed to be aged between 14 and 17, tried to buy something of low value.

A member of staff checked the note he handed over and found it was fake.

The young man then left, taking the note with him.

Half an hour later employees at the Cheesemonger shop contacted the police after a man paid for various goods there using a fake Bank of Ireland £20 note.

Police say the two incidents are linked and they are appealing for help to identify the suspect who is described as 5ft 6in and slim with gelled hair.

He spoke with an Irish accent and was wearing a blue hooded top at the time of the incidents.

Sergeant Neil Johnston said: “It is possible that the male responsible will look to use more counterfeit notes around other businesses in the area and we want staff at local shops, restaurants and other premises to remain vigilant.”

Anyone with information about the scam should contact Police Scotland on 101 as soon as possible or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
