Young sailor’s chance to shine

-

A Dundee High School pupil is preparing to take her sailing talents to the global stage.

Anna Sturrock has arrived in China to represent Great Britain in the Youth Sailing World Championships, which get under way in Sanya next week.

The F6 pupil is part of a 14-strong GB team which will do battle with more than 380 of the world’s best U19 sailors, from 62 nations, across nine events from Monday.

RYA Scotland Elite Squad member Anna – who at 17 is the youngest member of Team GB – is taking to the waters of the South China Sea to compete in the women’s 29er fleet, in which she will continue her existing partnership with helm Bella Fellows.

The duo’s call-up followed an impressive first full season together in which they won their class at the British Youth National Championships, achieved top girls’ placing at the UK 29er Inlands Championships, recorded a fourth ladies’ placing in the 29er Eurocup event on Lake Garda, and ended the UK 29er grand prix series as top girls’ overall.

Selection for the World Championships has been the girls’ main aim since they teamed up together last August. And, with it being the first time the pair have competed in an Olympic-style event where only one boat from each class is selected to represent a country, this will also be the highlight of their sailing careers to date.
