100 years ago

The round-up of the Austro-Hungarian enemies in the United States began today, the Federal officials being assisted by the local authoritie­s. With the declaratio­n of war against Austria-Hungary, over a million subjects are added to the lists of alien enemies. Many Austrians long suspected of hampering the Government war plans have been arrested, and will be interned if they fail to convince the officials of their peaceful intentions. All Austro-Hungarians are barred from the 100 yard security zones.

50 years ago

Fife Planning Committee heard yesterday about ambitious plans for Newport. The committee approved a proposed amendment to the North-East Fife Area Developmen­t Plan providing for land for more housing, new roads, public open spaces and a school. The committee were told the only road running through the town was “very picturesqu­e” but rather twisty and narrow. This was one of the main points behind the existing one, with a new road being formed. The population is around 3,300.

The chance will be taken today to press home Dundee Harbour’s case to be the location for the new freight ferry link between Scotland’s east coast and Europe when members of the Scottish Affairs Parliament­ary Committee visit the city. The committee is visiting a number of port installati­ons and holding talks with port operators on the east coast today and tomorrow as part of its inquiry into the future of Scotland’s transport links with Europe. Tomorrow will include a visit to Montrose.

He was a Hollywood icon – a major box office star who, in the 1950s and ’60s, played opposite some of the leading actresses of that era. Kirk Douglas is best known for his leading roles in films like Paths of Glory (1957), Spartacus (1960) and Lonely Are The Brave (1962). But as he celebrates his 100th birthday today with a Beverly Hills tea party hosted by his eldest son Michael and daughter-in-law Catherine Zeta Jones, the legendary screen icon isn’t letting age define him – he will be publishing his 12th book.
