Fife and Perth parents were trendsetters this year when naming their newborn boys.

Jack was the most popular name in 2017 in both regions, as it was for Scotland as a whole – for the 10th consecutive year.

Noah and Amelia were the most popular names in Dundee, while Harris and Charlotte topped the list in Angus.

The most common girl’s name in Fife was Emily and it was Isla in Perth and Kinross,

For the second year, Olivia was the most popular girl’s name in Scotland according to figures released yesterday by the National Records of Scotland (NRS).

Of the 25,384 male births registered up to December 2, 453 were named Jack, followed by Oliver, James, Lewis and Noah.

Olivia was chosen as the name in 484 of the 23,935 registered female births, followed by Emily, Isla, Sophie and Jessica.

Harris was the only new entrant to the male top 10 nationally, rising six places to seventh on the list.

Among the “big climbers” in the top 50 list were Theo, Muhammad, Sienna, Willow and Mila.

NRS said 2,063 boys and 2,767 girls were given unique forenames.

Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop said the trend for unique names remained high.

She said: “Naming your baby is such an important decision and it’s always fun to see the names parents around Scotland are choosing. This year’s figures show some names have an enduring appeal.”

She continued: “The trend for unique names remains far higher than it has been in previous decades, indicating that today’s parents are thinking long and hard before choosing names for their babies.”

Other than Harris and Charlotte, popular names in the county of Angus included James, Oliver, Jack, Logan and Max for boys and Amelia, Ava, Lucy, Olivia and Thea for girls.

The traditional Scottish boy’s name Hamish managed to make it into the top 10 in Angus, bucking its lowly national position as the 62nd most popular name.

In Dundee, popular boy’s names included Muhammad, Theo and William, which all came in joint second, followed by Jack and Leo.

Behind Amelia, the next popular girl’s names in the city were Emily and Isla, followed by Jessica and Sophie and then Aria and Millie.

In Fife, Logan and Noah were the next most fashionable male names, followed by Leo and Alfie, while those living in the county preferred Olivia, Sophie, Amelia and Aria as female names.

Behind Jack, boys in Perth & Kinross were most commonly named Noah, Harry, Alexander, Logan and Mason, and after Isla, the names of Olivia, Emily, Hannah, Jessica and Lucy were the next favoured.
