Captain Kerr backed to be Dundee’s new Barry Smith

-

Derek Soutar last night hailed captain Cammy Kerr a carbon-copy of Dundee legend Barry Smith.

Soutar is a big fan of local lad Kerr who skippered the Dark Blues to a comprehensive 3-0 win over Partick Thistle last weekend as Neil McCann’s men gear up for the crunch festive period.

Kerr is a product of the Dens Park youth policy and has been welcomed with open arms by the fans since making the breakthrough into the top team during a derby day victory over city rivals Dundee United in January 2016.

Now the 22-year-old is turning into a mainstay for his beloved Dundee with Soutar comparing him to ex-club captain Smith who made almost 400 appearances for the Taysiders.

Former Dundee keeper Soutar said: “Cammy reminds me so much of Barry.

“He’s so committed to the club and doesn’t do anything flashy.

“But, at the same time, he never makes a mistake and that’s what his team-mates will like and appreciate about him the most.

“Cammy is Dundee through and through. The way he goes about his business, leading by example, is just like how Barry used to when he was captain at Dens.

“It’s great to see the club still producing homegrown players like Cammy who know they’ll get their chance.

“There’s so much more to come from him and if he keeps knuckling down – which I’m sure he will do – he too could go on to become a legend at Dens.”

Matty Henvey had a goal disallowed in the final minute as Dundee U20s drew 0-0 with Celtic in an SPFL Development League fixture at Links Park, Montrose, last night.

First-team players Kosta Gadzhalov, Randy Wolters, James Vincent and Kerr Waddell featured for the Dark Blues.

Team: Ferrie, Dryden, Rice, Gadzhalov, Waddell, Moore, Curran, Vincent, Henvey, Lambert, Wolters. Subs: Gourlay, Cameron, Anderson, Smith, Berry, Mooney.
