Don’t fall victim to scammers

-

Fife Trading Standards are warning the public not to fall victim to scammers this festive season.

While most people will be enjoying the annual holiday, it can also be a lucrative time for less scrupulous members of society.

The team is reminding Fifers to be especially vigilant against scams at Christmas and look out for potential warning signs.

These include being sent a letter, email or text out of the blue, stating that they have won a prize in a lottery or competition they didn’t enter and asking them to pay a fee to claim it.

It could also say they have to respond quickly so they don’t get time to think about it or talk to family and friends before they decide.

The team is also encouraging carers, relatives, friends and neighbours of someone who may be vulnerable to keep an eye out for warning signs.

These can include noticing if someone receives a lot of junk mail or frequent calls from strangers, seeing if their house is full of cheap-looking goods such as jewellery or health products, or noticing if the person is secretive when discussing finances.

If you or someone you know has been a victim of a scam, information and advice is available from the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 040506.
