Police have named a man who died after being found injured in a Dundee street as 67-year-old John Ogston.

An investigation was launched after he was found at the junction of Mains Road and Bayne Square in the Hilltown area at about 11pm on New Year’s day.

Mr Ogston, who is believed to have lived in the area, died in hospital on Tuesday.

His death is being treated as unexplained.

Witnesses include the driver of a taxi and the driver of a saloon-type vehicle, possibly a red Audi, seen in the area at around 11pm.

Detective Chief Inspector Graham Binnie said: “We are urgently looking to trace a number of witnesses, in particular the driver and any occupants of a red Audi-style motor car, four men who assisted with helping Mr Ogston into a nearby house and the driver of a taxi who may have driven along the street at or near the time of the incident.

“I would stress that due to the circumstances of the incident it may not have been immediately obvious to anyone who saw Mr Ogston that he was seriously injured.

“I would also appeal to anyone who has knowledge of the incident to contact Police Scotland.”

The cordon that had been in place since Mr Ogston was found was removed yesterday afternoon, although a heavy presence of police officers and detectives remained.

Police could be seen combing the street for clues throughout the morning and afternoon.

Residents of homes in the area said they were unable to help police with their inquiries into the incident with many describing the man’s death as a “mystery”.
