McInnes refuses to rule out more new faces despite McGinn return

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes insists he will go the extra mile for another player this month if he can land someone to improve his squad.

Former Don Niall McGinn has become the club’s first January signing after he returned to Pittodrie on a three-and-a-half year deal following a six-month spell in South Korea.

The Dons boss is happy with his squad but has not ruled out making another signing if the right player becomes available.

He said: “When players of the quality of McGinn become available you have to try and if there was another one of his quality I’d try to do something again but I’m more than happy with what I’ve got.

“There may be one or two going out on loan but if the window was to close I’d be more than happy.”

McInnes believes landing McGinn, who will join his team-mates for the club’s winter training camp in Dubai next week, epitomises the quality he is looking for at Pittodrie.

McInnes also insists McGinn could have made the difference in Aberdeen claiming all three points against Hearts on Saturday rather than having to settle for just one following a goalless draw.

He said: “Saturday was the sort of game Niall McGinn would have made an impact in. In a tight game where one goal can win it he has the ability to make something happen.

“I’m disappointed we didn’t win the game and disappointed for the crowd as we had a big turnout and the roof would have come off had we got the goal.

“But the fans recognise we did everything we could to try to win and we’re in a good place as we look towards the games after the winter break.

“I’m optimistic about the second half of the season. The new lads are more aware of the demands and what is expected and hopefully we can get something similar to last year when we set off like a train in the second half of the season.

“On the scoring charts we don’t have anyone in double figures but we have more goals than last season.

“That is quite surprising because when you look at other teams, most sides have a striker who is in double figures at this stage of the campaign.”
