SCOTTISH DEBUTS Dundee Hawkhill’s Kristof Hornyik made his Scotland debut for the U17 team at the Celtic Internatio­nal Cross-Country in Northern Ireland, writes our athletics correspond­ent. Placing 37th in a combined 5.4km with the U20s, Hornyik (20.48) was Scotland’s second counter.

U15 Fife AC’s Ben Sandilands had an even harder Scottish debut. Moving up to the U17 team, the Kirkcaldy runner was 42nd overall, and Scotland’s third counter in 21.01.

U20 Jamie Battle (Ireland) led the field in 19.06, while Morpeth’s Rory Leonard was second and first U17 in 19.11.

Timothy Cheruiyot of Kenya won the men’s 8km from Mogos Tuemay of Ethiopia, sharing a time of 23.12.

The first British finisher in the senior men’s race was Andy Vernon in fourth.

Dundee Hawkhill’s Kristian Jones was fifth, representi­ng Wales.

Margaret Chelimo Kipkemboi of Kenya won the women’s 5.4km in 19.55.

In the UK Cross Challenge Sian Heslop (Macclesfie­ld) headed the U15 3,600m in 14.03, with Fife AC’s Anna Hedley second in 14.36.

VP Glasgow’s Valencia Wright won the U13 1,800m in 7.14, followed by Hannah Ryding (Giffnock North) in 7.38, with Fife AC’s Isla Hedley third in 7.41. A Carle 12 E Rattray 5, C MacDonald 11 M Roberts 8, P Smith 13 J Doig 18.
