BRECHIN CITY 1 MORTON 1

Brechin manager Darren Dods praised another battling display from his side as they held on to claim a Championship point at home to Morton.

Dods said: “We started the first half really well and scored a good goal. We controlled the midfield with Calum Tapping excellent on his return to the club.

“We lack a bit of height in defence, but we were unfortunate to lose a goal from a corner. We blocked the first shot then the rebound was put in.

“In the second half we were pinned back in defence, but we looked to hit on the break.

“We defended well with Aron Lynas superb against their dangerman Scott Tiffoney.

“Aron has been excellent for us and is getting better and better. He is just 21 and if he shows the same improvement in the next 18 months as he has in the last, it will be great for the club.

“Connor McLennan scored our goal and I will try to extend his loan from Aberdeen. He is only 18 and has hit a bit of form.

“It is great to see Andy Jackson back. He was our top scorer last season but was injured in our third game this season.

“I hope to bring two or three players in during this window to freshen things up.”

Brechin opened the scoring on seven minutes. Jackson made a great run down the left and crossed for McLennan to find the net.

Morton were level four minutes later. A Gary Harkins corner caused Brechin problems, Thomas O’Ware had a shot blocked by Graeme Smith and Bob McHugh shot high into the net.

Morton keeper Derek Gaston saved from Jackson but Morton did most of the probing and Tiffoney shot just wide on 15 minutes.

McHugh had a shot deflected wide, then Tiffoney volleyed wide from a good position.

Morton did all the attacking in the second half and on 57 minutes a shot from McHugh slipped just wide.

On 72 minutes, Gary Oliver lobbed over Smith and Paul McLean cleared off the line. Two minutes later, McLean cleared off the line again in a goalmouth scramble.

As time ran out, Tiffoney shot into the side-netting, then in stoppage-time, Smith saved at the feet of the winger.
