Glens close gap on Strathie with 11-try win over Harris

-

Glenrothes kicked off the new year in impressive fashion when they chalked up a 77-5 win at home to Harris in BT Caledonia Division One on Saturday.

Two early penalties by Kain Duguid set the ball rolling and by the interval the Carleton Park men had established a 39-0 lead, with Chris Docherty claiming a hat-trick.

There was also one apiece for Cammy Goodall and Duguid, who also landed four conversions.

The Fifers added six more tries, with Docherty taking his tally to four, while Goodall and Duguid added another one apiece, Ross Hutchison had a brace and Ryan Venters also crossed the whitewash, with Duguid slotting four of the conversions to complete the success.

The result has seen Glenrothes, who occupy third spot in the table, trim the gap on second-placed Strathmore to six points, albeit they have played one game more than the Inchmacoble men whose challenge stuttered when they succumbed 15-8 away to Dunfermline.

Liam Quarm and Scott Gracie had a try apiece, while Adam Fraser kicked the other points as the home side battled back from 8-0 down after Ally Olivier had dotted down and Sean Webster booted a penalty for Strathie.

Elsewhere, Alloa suffered a home defeat for the first time since April 2016 when they went down 17-0 to leaders Caithness despite a gutsy performance.

There was no change at the top of Division Two (Midlands) after leaders Hillfoots eased to a comfortable 86-10 win at home to Stirling County Bridgehaugh.

Their nearest pursuers Blairgowrie – whom Hillfoots had beaten the previous Saturday – were equally convincing in seeing off Morgan 59-7 at JJ Coupar Park to remain a point behind the pacesetters in the league table.

Kinross posted a 38-12 home win over Kirkcaldy seconds and Madras emerged as 31-22 winners at home to Panmure.

Waid Academy remain at the summit of Division Three (Midlands), despite suffering only their second defeat of the campaign when they went down 35-20 away to Rosyth Sharks.

Howe of Fife seconds trimmed the deficit to four points, with a game in hand, after a 63-26 home win over the Glenrothes Development XV.

Crieff & Strathearn scored a 102-7 success away to Stobswell and Dundee University Medics beat Arbroath 20-14.
