Fife bowler wins world indoor mixed pairs.

Lesley Doig, a 26-year-old dental nurse in Cupar, partnered England’s Jamie Chestney to the ‘Just’ World Indoor mixed pairs title at Potters in Hopton-on-Sea yesterday.

In a high-quality final, Doig and Chestney chalked up a deserved 8-4 7-6 win over English international Bex Field and Arbroath’s Darren Burnett.

The East Fife ace, who plays outdoors for Strathmiglo, and was runner-up in the Women’s World Outdoor singles in New Zealand in 2016, played brilliantly at lead on her first appearance at Potters, but admitted that she had not even met Chestney until the start of the event.

Doig said: “Jamie was so easy to play for, and he produced some outstanding bowls under pressure.”

The Fifer, whose expression hardly changed for the two hours or so on the rink, broke into a smile after the presentation of the Langham Blue Glass Goblets that awaited the winners.

Shots were so hard to come by that a treble on the seventh end of the first end was enough to tip the balance the way of Doig and Chestney and a treble on the fifth end of the second set looked to be doing the same for Field and Burnett.

But, while the green duo cashed in on their advantage in the first set, the red team lost their way in the second, and a double on the ninth end saw Doig and Chestney home.

Earlier, when Chestney and Burnett clashed in the second round of the open singles, it was the Arbroath community police officer who came out on top 7-5 8-4, thanks to his consistent drawing.

Chestney is normally accurate with his attacking bowls, but had little luck, and had to endure some cruel results as Burnett clinched a place in the quarter-finals, where he will face the winner of today’s match between defending champion Paul Foster and Welsh hope Jason Greenslade.
