Spurs reel in Juventus as City hit four in Basel

English clubs earn positive results to take into home legs of last-16 ties

Christian Eriksen completed a remarkable Tottenham comeback as they rallied from two down to draw 2-2 with Juventus in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.

Spurs will take two precious away goals into the second leg at Wembley next month after Harry Kane’s clinical finish and a clever free-kick from the superb Eriksen ensured a fascinating contest finished level in Turin.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men were on the brink after Gonzalo Higuain put Juventus two up within nine minutes, the second a penalty after Ben Davies fouled Federico Bernardeschi.

But Kane pulled one back, only Juve’s second goal conceded in 17 games, before Higuain missed a second penalty in what could prove a decisive moment in this tie.

Juve surrendered all momentum after their blistering start and Spurs will now be targeting a first Champions League quarter-final since 2011.

Kane felt the comeback showed “the character of the squad”.

He said on BT Sport: “It was an excellent performance after that (conceding the two goals) and we deserved to get back into the game. We look back now, two away goals we’re taking to Wembley, it’s a great result.

“I had a chance before it (his goal) and I should have scored that, but like I always say, you’ve got to be ready for the next one.

“Dele (Alli) put a great ball in and I managed to finish it off. That got us back into the game, which was important.”

Ilkay Gundogan scored twice as Manchester City put one foot in the quarter-finals with an emphatic 4-0 win over Basel.

In-form Sergio Aguero scored his 198th goal for the club and Bernardo Silva also got on the scoresheet as Pep Guardiola’s side cruised to victory on a freezing night at St Jakob-Park.

Most of the damage was done as City rattled in three goals in a blistering nineminute spell early in the first half, dashing Basel’s hopes of causing an upset after making a bright start.

Gundogan struck a sublime second after the break but the Premier League leaders were cruising by then, having eased off to conserve energy in their continuing quadruple quest.

Kevin De Bruyne was removed from the action after an hour and Guardiola also eased Leroy Sane back into action as a second-half substitute following his rapid recovery from an ankle injury.

City skipper Vincent Kompany wants to see his side produce another dominant display in the return leg in Manchester next month.

He told BT Sport: “If we have this game at the Etihad and it’s 3-2 or a 2-2 draw that won’t give us a good feeling to go to the next round with.

“We’ve shown we’re the better team today and only for a lack of motivation and effort could we not be that team again when we play at the Etihad.”
