Delight for Gowfers with cup win over Arthurlie

FIFTH ROUND: Lochee United and Carnoustie Panmure march on in Scottish Junior Cup

- Mark johnson

It was a good day for the region in the Scottish Junior Cup, with Lochee United and Carnoustie Panmure beating West Region sides to progress to the last eight of the competition.

Carnoustie boss Alan McSkimming was rightly delighted with his side’s performance in winning 3-0 at home to Arthurlie.

The first half was fairly even, although the visiting keeper was kept slightly the busier.

Carnoustie dominated the second half and took a deserved lead with 11 minutes to go after Sam Simpson won a penalty when he was tripped in the box, and then converted the spot-kick.

Four minutes later it was 2-0 when Ryan Dignan calmly stroked the ball home after good work on the left by Simpson.

The cherry on the cake for the Gowfers came in added time when a great move on the right involving Dignan and Robert Urquhart ended with Simpson curling a delicious effort into the top corner.

Meanwhile, George Shields was just as happy with Lochee United’s battling performance.

They were 2-0 winners in Ayrshire against Irvine Meadow.

After withstanding an early barrage from their hosts, United took the lead on 37 minutes. Grant Lawson reacted quickest after a Craig Smith effort was blocked.

Meadow started the second half just like the first.

However, Scott McComiskie doubled Lochee’s advantage on 68 minutes.

The Ayrshire siude tried to get back into the game but Lochee’s defence were in no mood to surrender their lead, and held firm.
