Petrie praises team for making point

ELGIN CITY 2 MONTROSE 2

Montrose stayed at the forefront of the League 2 title hunt, but only after brave resistance rescued a point at Elgin.

Manager Stewart Petrie praised his team’s resolve to twice come from behind and also to repel three golden chances created by their hosts in stoppage-time in a dramatic match.

“Allan Fleming pulls off a great save at the end,” said Petrie.

“Overall we are happy with a point to come from behind twice against Elgin, who have won four on the trot at home and have the best home record in the league.”

He added: “It keeps our run going and its a point at a difficult venue where teams will struggle, there’s no doubt about that.”

Elgin scored on nine minutes. Perhaps the goalkeeper was unsighted when Brian Cameron let fly with a low effort from 25 yards which skidded past him.

Gary Fraser equalised with four minutes left of the half, meeting a Terry Masson cross with a superb header.

Montrose came undone again 12 minutes after the break, as former player Jordan Allan’s free kick was turned across goal by Cameron and Chris McLeish was unmarked to prod home.

Petrie made changes and one of his subs, recent signing from Lochgelly Martin Rennie, was to make an astonishing impact. On the park for seconds, he rose to met a high ball in the box and head past Brett Long on 75 minutes to net his first senior goal.
