Family raises funds in race against time to save daughter’s sight

-

An Angus family dedicating 2018 to helping save their daughter’s sight will begin fundraising this weekend.

Liam and Ashley Wilkie’s daughter Caitlin suffers from Bardet-Biedl syndrome, a rare condition which could take her sight by the time she reaches her teens.

The three-year old’s parents have set out to raise cash for research.

The Kirriemuir family will begin their efforts with a race night on Saturday in Northmuir Hall. There will also be a raffle and auction.

Items put up for the bidding include a Scotland football top signed by Barry Ferguson, two tickets to see Manchester United, a signed Simple Minds CD and hospitality for four at Kirriemuir Thistle.

Anyone can put a bid on the items and find out about others up for auction, by calling Ashley on 07764 501809. The family initially set out to raise £5,000 for the research, but have already smashed that target with almost £10,000 raised.

More events are being planned for later in the year.

Ashley said: “A breakthrough in this area could see Caitlin’s sight saved as most sufferers are registered blind by their teenage years.

“We’re overwhelmed by the initial, positive response to our fundraising and thank everyone who has donated.

“We’re extremely grateful to the many local businesses and good-hearted people who have sponsored races and donated to our auction and raffle.

“The night would not be able to go ahead without all the support.”
