Mr E Scrymgeour last night addressed a meeting with the view to his becoming a candidate for the Parliamentary representation of Dundee. The meeting was held in St Andrew’s Church Hall and Mr George Robertson presided over a large attendance. Mr Scrymgeour reviewed the attitude of the Labour party in the present situation and specially dealt with the intimation made throughout the country that Labour was coming into power. It looked mysterious, he said, but it was all quite simple.

The body of a 60-year-old woman was found yesterday near the East Links at the Fife holiday resort of Elie and Earlsferry. The police are treating the case as murder. The woman was identified as Miss Kathleen Veitch, of East Kittyfield, Melrose, who disappeared after going for a walk in the grounds of the Roman Catholic convent, at Elie on February 28. A police spokesman said the woman’s body was found concealed on the East Links. The police have made an appeal for information.

Tayside Fire Brigade is to get a new computerised command and control system at a cost of £1.3 million. The region’s policy and resources sub-committee approved the estimated total cost and accepted a tender from Fortek Computers for supply and installation of the equipment. The brigade’s communications centre is currently at Blackness Road headquarters in Dundee. A new centre has been built at Macalpine Road which the brigade expect to take over building next month.

Education Secretary John Swinney’s local high school has issued a crisis plea to parents asking them to help teach maths. Blairgowrie High head teacher Bev Leslie said the school is looking for “creative short-term measures” to cope with the chronic shortage. In a letter seen by The Courier, she wrote: “Any parents with a maths or related degree who would be interested in supporting our pupils in the short-term, please contact either myself or (depute head) Mrs Hill.”
