Concern over loss of bus service
Concerns over the loss of a north-east Fife bus service have prompted a call for a rethink.
MP Stephen Gethins has written to Stagecoach East Scotland about its plans to axe the 77B service between Gauldry and Dundee via Newport-on-Tay.
The move follows representation by several constituents living in Newport who feared removing the service would particularly impact on elderly and disabled people who need to access health services.
In his letter to Stagecoach commercial director Douglas Robertson, Mr Gethins said: “My constituents have informed me of the importance of service 77B to areas served by the 77B route in Newport-in-Tay, including access to vital services located up a steep and hilly part of the town; these services are the health centre, the pharmacy, and Craighead Nursing Home.
“Additionally, they say it is difficult for many people to visit this area by foot, especially by those who are more infirm.
“Another concern is the service provides a direct route to Dundee and to local shops in Newport-on-Tay. It is understood that constituents have been advised they can use alternative services (92 TayportSt Andrews), however this service does not go to Dundee, and timings do not fit for connecting with the 77 (Dundee-Gauldry).”
He said constituents dispute the claim by Stagecoach that the service is underused.
