100 years ago

Much has been said in the marketplac­e in regard to the priority grading scheme in the linen trade, but otherwise silence has prevailed. The measure goes on, and the only remaining feature of interest is the date when it shall become operative. No doubt the trade will be apprised of this very shortly. Business operations are continued. Formerly the buyer had to be cultivated, but now it is entirely a question of pleading with the seller – one of the changes that have come into operation.

50 years ago

Provost Scott of Cupar last night made a spirited reply to criticisms about the condition of the Town Council’s former refuse tip at Cupar Muir. The provost was answering charges levelled by Major J.D. Graeme Reid, chairman of Cupar District Council. Major Reid said the tip which was vacated by the Town Council over a year ago was in a disgracefu­l condition. Provost Scott said that when it was decided to discontinu­e the use of the tip, the whole area was left in a tidy condition and the gate locked.

Two 13-year-old girls hurt in the Warrington bombings yesterday told how a trip to buy Mother’s Day gifts turned to horror. Best friends Laura Hill and Ruiel Bradshaw were struck down by shrapnel as the second bomb exploded only 20 feet from them in the town centre. The girls, who are beds side by side in Warrington General Hospital, had only been in the town five minutes when the explosions happened. The girls said that they thought the noise was coming from fireworks.

Prime Minister Theresa May has vowed to defeat “the forces of evil” after a day of terror in the heart of London. Four people, including a police officer, were killed when a knifeman launched an attack outside the Houses of Parliament. At least two of those killed were pedestrian­s mown down by the attacker moments earlier on Westminste­r Bridge. The assailant also died after being shot by police. Around 40 other people were hurt, some of whom suffered “catastroph­ic injuries”.
