Fife AC land title at last

-

Fife AC took the women’s race senior gold medals for the first time in their history at the Scottish Road Relay Championships at Livingston.

Having finished second in 2014 and 2015, the quartet of Megan Crawford, Annabel Simpson, Helen Sharpe and Steph Pennycook came home in a winning time of one hour 45 minutes 32 seconds.

Lothian RC took silver and Edinburgh University Hare and Hounds bronze.

“For years now we have been there or thereabouts at this race and a couple of others so it is great to be National Road Relay champions,” said Crawford.

“Every year our coach, Ron Morrison, says to us ‘is this going to be our year?’ but this time it really is our year.

“We’re delighted because we have had those second and third places before.

“It looked a strong team on paper this time but you never know what can happen out there on the course in a road relays event.”

The result was also a welldeserved reward for former Leuchars resident Sharpe, who has spent 12 years travelling from Amsterdam, Bristol and Cardiff to represent Fife.

Crawford added: “I’ve been running for Fife AC for about 10 years now and it will be good for the club to win this because success breeds success.”

Fife AC, represented by Addy Gerrard, Lynne Stephen and Innes Bracegirdle, took silver in the over-50s race, won by Edinburgh AC.
