Awards for Scotland’s outstandin­g youths to be presented in Fife

Celebratio­n of Scotland’s leaders in Year of Young People are being celebrated

An awards ceremony recognisin­g the country’s most outstandin­g young people is to be hosted in Fife.

Junior Chamber Internatio­nal, an organisati­on aimed at empowering 18 to 40-year-olds to develop as leaders, will host its Ten Outstandin­g Young Persons awards at the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum in Dunfermlin­e on May 26.

The venue has been chosen to mark Scotland’s Year of Young People.

The awards are now in their 35th year of recognisin­g and honouring young people who have excelled in their chosen field.

Previous Scottish nominees include Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, founder of Scottish Internatio­nal Relief; Olivia Richmond Giles, a quadruple amputee who started the charity 500 Miles which aims to support amputees, principall­y in Malawi and Zambia; and worldleadi­ng solo percussion­ist Dame Evelyn Glennie.

Organisers are looking for nomination­s from across the country of men and women aged 18-40.

The Scottish nominees will then be submitted to JCI Internatio­nal for the chance to represent the country at the global awards in India in November.

Past global winners have included martial arts legend Jackie Chan, actress Michelle Yeoh and Zimbabwean gender activist Betty Makoni.

Noral Rundell, chief executive of the Carnegie Dunfermlin­e Trust, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming the winners of the Outstandin­g Young Person’s Awards of 2018 to the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum in Dunfermlin­e.

“Andrew Carnegie would have been proud to know that the place of his birth was being put to such inspiring use in recognisin­g these extraordin­ary individual­s.”
