Ancient caves to feature on TV

-

The ancient Wemyss Caves will feature on TV this weekend.

The site, which is home to Pictish and other historic carvings, will be seen on Channel 4’s Britain at Low Tide at 8pm on Saturday.

The documentary series will broadcast a Fife-based edition as the final episode of its second season, highlighting coastal archaeology in the East Neuk and Levenmouth area.

Filming took place last year and included interviews with members of the Save Wemyss Ancient Caves Society, which was founded in 1986 to preserve, promote and raise awareness of the site.

The caves, near East Wemyss, are thought to be between 5,000 and 8,000 years old.

The society has been working with archaeologists from the SCAPE Trust at St Andrews University to research and document their remarkable carvings and history.

Society chairman Mike Arrowsmith said members were looking forward to introducing them to new admirers.

“We were delighted to get the chance to show off the precious archaeology in this part of Fife, and the work we do to keep it safe for the future,” he said.

“We hope it will encourage more people to come out here to have a look for themselves.”

Joanna Hambly from SCAPE Trust said the programme would bring the site to a much wider audience and the team hoped to investigate further over the coming months.
