Dined out on his story

-

“Thursday’s Craigie column contained a very informative article about a bus crash,” says a Monikie reader.

“After some research (asking two local pensioner mates!) the site of the crash would appear to be at the junction of East Dock Street with Broughty Ferry Road, nearby Taybank.

“The special lampost is likely to be an ‘extension’ flashing indicator for the police box which was sited nearby. This extra height would allow the lamp to be seen from several nearby streets.

“Does Graham Martin-Bates agree with this theory?” David Kett has been in touch and says: “I enjoyed the very interesting article on the St Andrews ‘treasure’ by Michael Alexander in the Weekend magazine.

“The former St Andrews town councillor and author W.T. Linskill may have been deemed entitled to his romantic fantasies as his own story is stranger than fiction. He escaped the Tay Bridge Disaster by a hair’s breadth.

“When the doomed train pulled into Leuchars Station there was no sign of the Dean of St Andrews, who was supposed to be collecting him. So, as it was such a foul night, he decided to proceed to Dundee.

“The train was moving out of the station when a porter, running along the station, shouted at the driver to stop. The Dean’s carriage had just arrived, and Linskill subsequently dined out for many years on the story of this miraculous escape.

“His travelling companion, who actually left the train at Ladybank, was not so lucky. He had been under the mistaken impression that he had to change there, but realised his mistake and rejoined the train. This Mr Beynon did a reverse Linskill and, unfortunately, went down with the train.”
