Tay yields 40 spring salmon in week

Over 40 fresh spring salmon were landed on the River Tay last week.

The lower river saw a few fish landed before the water coloured from heavy rain and snow melt.

Fish have now been caught below Stanley with Upper Redgorton seeing four fish in three days. Alan Robertson landed a 13lb fish and that was followed by catches for George McKinlay and Greggor Nimmo up to 14lb from the boat.

Alistair Mitchell caught a 9lb fish casting the fly in Aitken Head on the Benchil beat and Frank Muller landed a seven-pounder in the Back Dam on Catholes beat.

Further upstream Taymount saw six fish but Stobhall only had one. However, it was a 24lb beauty caught by Grace Van Beek.

Ballathie had a couple in the week with a 20-pounder caught by the Yorke party on Monday.

Upper Islamouth and Meikleour managed three with Graeme Leslie’s party enjoying success, and Bob Crawford and Peter Stewart-Baker landing fish.

On the middle river, the area around Murthly continues to fish well with both Murthly beats and Glendelvin­e having success.

Up at Newtyle, Brandon Bryant enjoyed success on the fly from the Cotter landing a 9lb fish.

In the upper area, two were landed on Findynate with a 12lb fish caught by Perth and District AC secretary Bob Mason.

Loch Tay is also seeing sport with Fish n’ Trips recording four, which included good fish up to 21lb for John Struzik, Graham Armstrong and Jamie Cannon.

There has also been news of a 36lb monster caught in a private boat by the “Lomond boys” – Robert Ramage, Sid and Fraser Garth.

On the West Haugh and Dunfalland­y beat four salmon were landed with Marty Wilson catching a 20lb beauty.

Mary Bowman landed her first salmon, a fresh 10lb fish from the lower Tummel on the fly.

The Tummel was also seeing limited sport with a couple reported from the Pitlochry AC stretch at Portnacrai­g. Alan Wales caught a 19lb fish on the fly and Colin Fairgrieve caught a similar sized fish on a spinner.
