Beach wheelchair project wins financial backing
The St Andrews coastline will become more accessible thanks to a grant from local councillors.
North-east Fife area committee has agreed to give £7,000 towards a new Tourism St Andrews’ initiative aiming to make the town’s beaches accessible to all.
The initial plan is to purchase five beach wheelchairs, which will be available to book at no cost.
They will provide opportunities for elderly residents and visitors, and those with physical disabilities, to access the world-famous beach.
Working with the Links Trust and the Fife Coast and Countryside Trust, the scheme will be administered by a combination of volunteers from the Ask Andrew Ambassadors scheme and paid staff.
The Byre Theatre has offered the use of its booking system for the scheme, while all ongoing maintenance will be undertaken by the Links Trust.
The committee’s convener Donald Lothian said: “The committee are very pleased to be able to contribute to this very worthwhile project.
“It will provide access to open spaces to those in need, enabling us to contribute to our local community planning priority to support vibrant and sustainable communities and improve health, wellbeing and lifelong learning.”
The Liberal Democrat councillor added: “Accessing the beach for elderly and disabled people, and particularly wheelchair users, will provide benefit to both them and to their families and carers.
“For parents, especially, the availability of a beach wheelchair will ensure that families can participate in a variety of activities, outings and quality family time on the beach.”
