Dundee Parish Council took an important step in connection with the proposal to include the Broughty Ferry portion of Monifieth parish within the city area. A minute was submitted reporting on the conference which took place between Dundee and Monifieth Parish Councils, in the course of which it was stated that Mr Thomas Russell had explained that Dundee was desirous of carrying through the annexation in the spirit of friendline­ss and amicable arrangemen­t.

A Glenrothes man who cooks by gas and heats his house by gas has been sent an electricit­y bill for £238 12s 4d. The account, for the period ended March 13, was sent to Mr J.A. Higgins of Pinkerton Road. Said Mr Higgins yesterday: “I have lived in Glenrothes for the past 12 years and so far the highest bill I have ever received was for about £3 10s.” Mr Higgins (46) is at present attending a course at the Government Training Centre, Muircockha­ll. His normal electrity bill amounts to about 35s.

An 85-foot mast made from a tree trunk specially chosen and prepared for Captain Scott’s historic ship the Discovery, along with two others, arrived at Discovery Point in Dundee after a 120-mile journey from Macduff on the Moray Firth. The new arrival marks an important stage in the ship’s remasting and rigging, a process sponsored by Discovery Quay Developmen­ts, developers of the waterfront site. A second delivery of masts will be made to Discovery Point in a fortnight.

A Dundee woman who launched a “crusade” against private parking firms has been ordered to pay £24,500 in unpaid fines. Carly Mackie ignored more than 200 notices slapped on her car for parking in a restricted area at City Quay. Vehicle Control Services took Ms Mackie to court for ignoring their charges because she believed they were unenforcea­ble in Scotland. But in a move that could have implicatio­ns for many motorists, Sheriff G. Way ruled that Ms Mackie must pay £24,500.
