CRUSHED: Circumstances of death subject of Health & Safety investigation
An accident that claimed the life of a Fife man at his work in West Sussex is being probed by police.
Dr Craig McEwan died in the incident at Tesla Engineering, in Storrington, on March 23.
It is understood he was crushed to death – however, the circumstances remain under investigation by Sussex Police and the Health and Safety Executive.
Dr McEwan, 34, is formerly from Springfield, but lived in Shoreham-by-Sea.
According to his LinkedIn profile he had worked at Tesla Engineering, where he was manager of superconducting magnets, for seven years, and had studied at Dundee University.
Emergency services were called to Tesla’s Storrington plant at around 1.30pm on Friday, March 23.
An air ambulance was scrambled and firefighters were said they were alerted to a report of a man injured while working on a four-metre high structure.
Despite the efforts of paramedics, Dr McEwan passed away.
His family, including partner Gill Hume, are due to lay him to rest at a funeral service in Springfield Parish Church later this month. They declined to comment when contacted by The Courier yesterday.
A spokesperson for Sussex Police said: “Police were called to Tesla Engineering Ltd in Water Lane, Storrington, at 1.30pm on Friday, March 23 following reports that a man had been injured while working on the premises.
“Emergency services were on scene, but despite the best efforts of the paramedics the victim, a 35-year-old local man, sadly died. “Next of kin have been informed. “An investigation into his death will be led by Sussex Police in liaison with the Health and Safety Executive.”
No one from Tesla Engineering, a worldwide supplier of electromagnets, gradient coils, composites, motors and consultancy, was available for comment yesterday.
