Strathie out to spoil Caithness party

- STeve scoTT

There are precious few baubles left to be collected in Scottish club rugby after a swathe of titles were decided last week, but one could be pocketed in the Midlands tomorrow.

Sadly it won’t be for a Midlands team, however, with Caithness seeking to nail down a likely Caledonia Division One success when they visit second place Strathmore at Inchmacoble Park.

Strathie have had an excellent season but have been trailing the Northerners for most of the way and last week’s single-point win at Glenrothes means Caithness need only a point from their trip to Forfar.

Alloa still have designs on overhauling Strathie for second place and host Dunfermline at Earlsfield.

Division Two Midlands was long since secured by Hillfoots, while Dundee University Medics won Division Three on points differential, with three sides having finished on 61 points.

In National League rugby only Howe of Fife are in action in the Midlands tomorrow, facing GHK at Duffus Park. The National two title was taken by Kirkcaldy last week and it only remains to be seen if Dumfries or Hamilton will follow them up to National One.

The destination of National One won’t be decided until next week with Edinburgh Accies and JedForest still locked on 99 points going into the final weekend.

Outside the senior leagues junior season is reaching its conclusion.

Dundee Rugby, at the end of a strong season on and off the pitch, have a particularly big weekend with two touring Under-17 teams – boys and girls – from Canada being hosted with matches.

It’s a fitting way to mark the first anniversary of the Dundee Under-17 girls’ team, the first of its kind in the city.

Dundee’s Under-16s take on Mackie at Alloway Place in the Caledonia Cup Bowl semi-final on Sunday, for a place in the Caley finals at Madras’ Station Park on Sunday April 29. The Under-15s are already there for their shield final with Perthshire.

Madras are looking for volunteers to help the finals day run smoothly, with more than 1,000 players and spectators expected. Anyone who can help should contact secretary Lynn Christie via the Facebook page.
