Dundee High could play big part in title race

-

Dundee High still have a big part to play in the season finale in BT National League One, but it’s the role of a potential spoiler on a dramatic day tomorrow.

Edinburgh Accies and Jed-Forest are locked at the top of the division seeking the sole outright promotion place into next season’s BT Premiership – maybe the last ever – both having played 21 games, won 20, lost one, with 19 bonus points and 99 full points accrued.

Both are away in their last remaining fixtures, left outstanding from the snowfalls at the beginning of last month.

Accies are at Philiphaugh to take on Selkirk, while Jed are at Mayfield to play Dundee.

Accies have the advantage of knowing all they have to do is match Jed, thanks to their hefty 233-point lead in points scored differential. Both could still end up in the Premiership next year of course – the second place side will have a play-off on neutral ground against Glasgow Hawks.

Dundee’s remaining aim is to finish fourth, staying just ahead of Selkirk. The club has the most losing bonuses in the division this year, which shows how close they were on occasions, but they never quite got themselves into the promotion fight.

Kirkcaldy have their silverware in the display cabinet already and all that remains to be determined is who comes up from National Two with them.

It cannot be Lasswade, who can’t catch Dumfries even if they win at Beveridge Park. Only Hamilton can catch the Saints in second but they need to win both their remaining games. Perthshire would confirm National Three status with a win in their final game, but it’s a tall order with the long trip and a morning kick-off against Orkney.

Haddington may not get the points they need to leapfrog ’Shire against promotion-chasing Highland tomorrow but they should in their other remaining fixture against rock-bottom Dalziel.

With Caithness getting a bonus despite shedding a half-century to a rampant Strathmore last week, all the Caledonia titles are now confirmed.

The new champions host Dunfermline while Strathmore’s five league point haul confirmed they will be second in advance of their final fixture against Glenrothes this week.
